Late Runner: "Spring"

Play Video

In the spring of 2021 I get a phonecall from Asger Tarpgaard, former guitarist in the danish cult-band Superheroes – we’ve been talking for a while, and he has this idea about how he and his label, Crunchy Frog, wants to do a live-session as a promo for the upcoming album “Nothing’s Real Anymore”. I grab my friend Yasser Yassin for a talk about how we are gonna execute on the idea. As it turns out, a member of Late Runner has a studio space in a big industrial building in Christiania, Copenhagen. We go there to inspect the room, and what we find is this amazing space full of natural sunlight and amazing ambience. Not long after that we cross our fingers, hoping for a sunny day, and what met us was exactly that. You may even call that luck! After what I believe was about 8 takes, we had the foundation for the piece. The editing required a lot fiddling, tempo changes (they insitsed on playing without a click-track for authenticity purposes) and adaption in order to sync up, but the results speak for themselves.

Inspirations

The inspiration for this piece emerged from an idea of a slow-moving and dwelling aesthetic. The song is quite slow in it’s tempo, which then again allows for the visuals to either be in dire contrast to the music, or follow along as ripples in a lake. The latter became the inspiration. Natural sunlight, a dolly, a gimbal, a bunch of vintage lenses and some very neutral lights was the setup for the production. The result is a steady-paced flowing music video, that seamlessly blends the musicians into the warm space.
