Looking back at 2023, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some really interesting people. One of these in particular is Jason. Jason Cutthroat as he is known when he performs solo or with his brother in the band “The Cutthroat Brothers”. Jason recently started working with danish musicians, recording a new album. Exploring the genre of blues, garage punk, rock’n’roll, rockabilly, and grunge, the sound takes on a melancholic and yet rough exterier, with simple and profound lyrics. Jason invited me for a session in the studio in late summer 2023, where we did a one-take recording of one of his songs. Filmed on my Blackmagic PCC4K, I explored the possibility of capturing the soul of the sound through a grainy and stylistic cinematic look.
The inspiration for the style came out of old horror and Black & White films from the late 1940’s. The contrasted look encapsulates a nostalgic and defined look, meant to evoke feelings of “the olden days”, mixed with a modern day look of the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L. I wanted the look to be very grungy and dirty, lots of grain and lots of noise. On top of that came the emulated film look of the sprockets of a 16mm film spool.
